Curriculum Vitae

Born 1933 in Berlin; vocational training, craftsman’s certificate and work in the industry in Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. ‘Sonderreifeprüfung’ (eng.: final examination), studies as a Vocational School Teacher and work experience in that field.  With the introduction of the school subject ‘Arbeitslehre’ (eng.: Vocational Training) collaboration with the planning team of the Walter-Gropius-School and development of the department ‘Arbeitslehre’ at the first comprehensive school of the Federal Republic of Germany. Transfer to the ‘Pädagogisches Zentrum  Berlin‘ (eng.: Pedagogic Center Berlin) as Scientific Director, continuous development of teaching materials for ‘Arbeitslehre’ in combination with further education for teachers. Since 20 years lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin.

 

 

Motivation

I am convinced that ‘Arbeitslehre’ is the joint between general-education school and the two interdependent fields of gainful occupation and housework.

-          The still apparent differentiation in the school system would be dispensable if adolescents were inspired by their practical work to question the theoretical explanation. Thus receptive textbook knowledge would be replaced by active interest.

-          The by brain research proven mutual stimulation of head and hand  is finally used in the teaching process.

Concerning the preparation for professional  life neither the elementary cultural technique nor the reading of ‘berufskundliche Blätter’ (eng.: vocational sheets) seems sufficient. Of vital significance is the project work  in different fields with the following characteristics:

In the end of the  process a respectable result is achieved, cooperation was mandatory, extracurricular contacts had to be made, ecological consideration and occupational safety become a matter of course..

-        Housework is not necessarily taught in today’s households. Since many students have never been prepared for it in school either,  the number of  indebted households rises, malnutrition and disorganization are not uncommon. The following terms encompass the gap between ignorance and the capability of competent living.

Tenancy law and consumer law, borrowing fees and financial investments, grocery shopping , garden technics, preservation methods , rent expenses and incidental costs, use of dwellings, energy saving, waste management.
