WizGo is the spin-off of the former DoNotFear project (2019-2020) [2] and develops digital solutions to strengthen public transport. It is a socially intelligent tool with an innovative contribution to the inclusive transformation of mobility in public transport.

Background: Some people feel unsafe and uncomfortable in public transport. While crime statistics in Europe do not show an increase in crime, the passengers' perception of safety is decoupled from this development. Many people feel uncomfortable on public transport and fear unpleasant and dangerous situations. For this reason, they hesitate to use public transportation, which thus prevents widespread acceptance of the use of sustainable mobility. This is a major obstacle to the reduction of individual transport and hinders the implementation of the mobility turnaround toward connected, service-oriented mobility in our smart cities of the future.

A major issue with subjective feelings of security and risk in public transport is the feeling to be alone – either completely or among strangers who do not care and will not help. This feeling is corroborated by the fact, that people in cities have fewer personal contacts with their co-citizens and often avoid seeking direct communication with strangers. However, the main recommendation made by security authorities on how to behave in such situations is to ask others for help. Since many passengers find it easier to interact with others online via their smartphones, WizGo provides this communication channel at a low-threshold level.

WizGo is made up through the words "Go" and "With" and thus embodies mobility and community. The WizGo tool opens a barrier-free communication channel for solidarity and support without the need for immediate direct personal interaction. WizGo allows transport users to (a) report anonymously discomfort inducing situations and places, (b) become a member of the community of supportive users, (c) be informed about recommendations on how to act /react in case of fear, and (d) raise an alarm. This will open up a new channel for solidarity and social behaviours that removes barriers to seeking for help.

WizGo has been successfully tested for technical functionalities and the human-technology component, and the design has been coordinated with users. In 2021, TU Berlin and WizGo UG are planning a broad-scale pilot in Berlin to test further functionalities. Additional pilots in other cities are planned.
