VERS aims to investigate the role of participation of public transport users in designing modern RFID-based access systems and improving the acceptability of new electronic ticketing solutions. Therefore, VERS examines attitudes towards IT-based and especially RFID-based access systems to public transport, identifies the reasons for reluctant attitudes, and investigates in how far user participation can be a solution for changing attitudes towards new technological offers in the public transport sector. On a societal level, the project thereby aims to leave the unproductive confrontation between IT business and a critical civil society. Moreover, the project doesn’t aim for scientifically creating acceptance but rather aims for providing citizens the rights of self-determination against the background of a digital world that is becoming increasingly confusing and generating diffuse fears. Following the concept of „Privacy by Design“, this approach is considered helpful to face conflicts of use and acceptance in the forefront of launching new technical solution.
