Summer School 2017 "Digital Cities"



The Berlin Node of EIT Digital is organizing a Summer School, taking place July 23rd – August 5th. Around 30 students from the EIT Digital Master School as well as 20 external students are expected to take part.

The Berlin Summer School builds on the understanding that – in order to create innovative solutions for cities – intelligent co-creation strategies are needed, involving citizens, businesses, service suppliers, city administration and policy making. Thus, the Summer School puts a strong emphasis on stakeholders in the urban eco-system and their role in technology development. The exploration of the citizen’s role in building the smart city – as collaborative actors, as initiators of bottom-up processes and prosumers of data and services – will receive special attention. The Summer School will inspire the participants to think about new social arrangements to create inclusive innovations which serve a broad base of users including disadvantaged groups.

During the Summer School, the participants will develop solutions for real life problems presented by representatives of Berlin’s civil society groups, administration, service suppliers and other stakeholders. Thereby, the participants will learn about and actively scout the potential of involving those who they are ultimately working for – the citizens and users. At the end of the two-week co-creation process with field studies and participative workshops, the students will present their ideas, solutions and business models to the case owners and a larger audience. The students will be mentored by experienced coaches as well as entrepreneurs and experts from the respective fields. In addition, in lectures and seminars conducted by high-level speakers and organized field trips, the students will develop and in depth understanding of the urban eco-system and its challenges and opportunities.
