NEAR2 - Network of Euro-Asian Railway Research

Lupe

The rapid development of Asian economies, particularly China, India and Russia, has increased volume of trade between Europe and Asia dramatically. Asian countries have become the largest trading partner in Europe. Currently, this exchange of goods takes place predominantly by ship. However, the railway offers a realistic alternative to maritime transport, which is gaining in importance. Even now, there are several routes available for trans-Eurasian country connection.

Due to its historical development and current limited capacity there are many tasks to overcome in order to realise and implement high-performance rail transport offers. This includes the modernization of infrastructure, operational procedures and service concepts. To ensure a good capacity utilisation interoperability issues are also of central importance.

To support research and practice in this area, a network of leading research and industry players from Europe and Asia will be established within the framework of the NEAR2 project. Its members will develop an agenda for research and development activities for the integration of rail transport in freight-distance transport. This will combine the existing structures and preliminary work, particularly in European rail research networks, thus capturing the current research findings.
