KIDD - AI in the service of diversity


Human-centred applications of digital systems, especially artificial intelligence (AI), have great potential – this is also true when it comes to discrimination: conscious and unconscious biases can be reflected in the algorithms or in the data being used (garbage in - garbage out). In order to avoid such biases and the associated potential for discrimination, it is important to accompany and control the design process of applications of digital systems and its data input. This can be done effectively if different perspectives are taken into account and people with diverse backgrounds are actively involved in the design process. This is the focus of the project "KIDD - AI in the service of diversity". In four pilots, a participatory process for the introduction of AI systems and other software applications is being developed and tested, taking ethical aspects and diversity into account.

The aim is to develop a standardized process (and criteria) that enable as diverse a group of people as possible to ensure fair, transparent and understandable human-centered applications of digital systems, especially AI. At the heart of the project are practical projects with corporate partners (see consortium).

The partners represent a variety of applications with respect to the use of human-centred digital systems: from Sales Intelligence, the evaluation of cleaning services to the use of AI in human capital management.

In each of the four practical projects, a co-creative process with respect to the implementation of AI processes will be developed and tested. Based on the experiences gained, a standardized "KIDD process" will be developed as well as quality criteria that can be applied in other company contexts. The accompanying derivation of a quality assurance procedure ensures sustainable process reliability.

The TU Berlin, as a partner in the project consortium, is responsible for the scientific research and coordination of the external evaluation of KIDD.


The coordination of the research project lies with the Berlin-based nexus Institut for Cooperation Management and Interdisciplinary Research.

The non-profit association female.vision e.V. contributes the relevant aspects of ethics and diversity and is responsible for the areas of communication and sustainability.

The TU Berlin is in charge of research and coordination of the scientific evaluation of the BMAS research project.

Munich-based CHEMISTREE GmbH, which specializes in digital matching (e.g. the formation of tandems within a company) in an operational environment based on algorithms, science, preferences and needs.

The Wehrheim-based Heraeus Medical GmbH, as part of a leading global technology group and one of the largest German family-owned companies.

epsum GmbH from Hamburg as a company that digitally optimises building cleaning.
