Electrification of long haul heavy-duty commercial vehicles with automated battery swapping stations. Acronym (eHaul)

Long-distance road haulage has a significant part in CO2 emissions of the transport sector and is also the fastest growing segment. The project “eHaul” aims to develop and implement a solution for  battery swapping for 40t electric trucks for their long distance-travels and energy services in the power grid. The project partners from logistics, energy supply, hardware and software system integration, vehicle technology and science are developing a fully automatic changeover concept, electrifying a route network in the Berlin / Brandenburg area and as far as Dresden and integrating all functions and interfaces in one system solution. In addition to providing the proof-of-concept for long-distance electric traffic, a business model is being created for the operation of the exchange stations, including the provision of network services. Due to this dual-use approach for the batteries, the high, scalable station utilization, the high mileage in freight transport, the technical maturity and economic economies of scale for components for electromobility (especially batteries), the battery change approach has the potential to be technically market-ready by 2025 realized and operated economically on the basis of the total costs. This sets the concept apart from all alternative, emission-free concepts for long-distance freight transport on the road. ARTE is responsible for the following tasks in this project

 

1. Comparison with the use of conventional vehicles

2. Comparison with the use of alternative emission-free technologies

3. Ecological analysis of the overall system

4. Economic analysis / market research report

5. List of critical points from an acceptance point of view

6. Increase in acceptance, increased participation of stakeholders

Oct. 2020 until Sep. 2023
